Get Started With Affiliate Marketing in 5 Simple Steps

Not interested in making extra money each month? If you couldn’t use an extra hundred bucks ( or more ) a month, then this blog isn’t for you. Want to figure out how to make some extra money sharing products or services you love anyway? Read on!

The number one question that I’m asked about affiliate marketing is: Do I need to have a blog or a big following to get started? Nope!

Get started with affiliate marketing in five easy steps, even if you don't have a blog.

Yes, having a blog is an excellent way to increase your affiliate marketing income, but it’s not critical to getting started today. Ready to start now? Here are the first five steps that I recommend:

Get Started Now

  1. Create a business presence on social media. You can create a free Facebook Business Page, Instagram Business Account, Youtube Account, or Pinterest Business account within a few minutes! Which one is best? I recommend that you choose your favorite social media platform that you’re already comfortable using on a personal level. If you’re not sure how to create a business page, each platform has free tutorials to help you get started!
  2. Start an email list! Yes, even if you don’t have a blog or a product, creating a lead magnet (aka a reason for people to join your list) and an email list where you can reach your target audience is invaluable. Learn more from my blog post here.
  3. Make a list of your favorite products/services. What do you love and what does your current community or target audience love (if you have one)? I always recommend being an affiliate for the products and services you already use! It makes writing authentic and informed recommendations easy and genuine.
  4. If you already have a small business, blog or direct sales business, align yourself with products and services that will benefit your current customers. For example, if you sell clothing, becoming an affiliate for your favorite accessories company might make sense for you and your business. Be sure to check your current companies policies and procedures before recommending affiliate products, especially if you’re in a direct sales business.
  5. Don’t become a spammy sales person! As always, provide your target audience with valuable information, entertainment, and quality recommendations without overloading them with buy this that and the other thing.

No matter why type of product or service that you sell, creating an effective call to action (CTA) will greatly increase your engagement on social media. Increased engagement activity on all of your posts will lead to more people seeing your sales posts and engaging with those posts as well. What does that lead to? More sales! Winning!

So now you know why having a call to action on every post is important. But, how do you actually implement it? Here are the strategies that I use:

Strategies for Creating a Call to Action

Consider the platform (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Blog etc.) and think about what you want your visitor to do? On a blog, it’s generally going to be to fill out a form or to click on a button (and then fill out a form or make a purchase).

On social media, you’ll want your target audience to like and comment on your post, and even better, share it too! However, outright asking for comments and likes can actually hurt your posts reach.

This means that your call to action (CTA) is just as important as your post itself, and you want to spend time on it. You not only want it to appeal to and motivate your visitors to take action, but you also want it to be clearly visible and apparent, without being blatant if your post is on social media.

So how can you craft a creative call to action without sounding desperate or spammy?

Calls to Action on Your Blog

For example, by creating a call to action that drives sign-ups to your newsletter, you can grow your email list. Therefore increasing your chances for affiliate sales as you’ll send them valuable info, blog posts, and relevant products that you recommend. Here are a few examples of clear calls to action to use on your blog posts:

  • “Claim your free subscription.”
  •  “Click here _____”
  • “Click here to start your free trial.”
  •  “Don’t waste precious time, learn how to ___ now.”
  • “Download your free report.”
  • “Sign up for your introductory ______”

Mental Health & Chronic Illness: Why It’s Critical We Discuss them TOGETHER.

I share openly about my chronic illness, Multiple Sclerosis, and my struggles with chronic pain, fatigue, and brain fog. Why? Because if my story can help one other person feel less alone, or help someone to be kinder towards a person with an invisible illness, then it was worth sharing.

While I’ve mentioned it, I don’t think that mental health, including depression and anxiety (two conditions I have), are talked about enough in today’s society. Sadly, there is still a stigma against mental health conditions.

“At the root of this dilemma is the way we view mental health in this country. Whether an illness affects your heart, your leg or your brain, it’s still an illness, and there should be no distinction.”

As we enter May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to share some statistics from Mental Health America. Does the fact that 80% of people struggling with a ‘traditional’ chronic health condition also struggle with a mental health condition surprise you?

It certainly doesn’t surprise me.

Chronic illness is isolating, exhausting, frustrating, and unpredictable. I cannot imagine living with MS and not also dealing with depression and anxiety. Actually, I had been receiving treatment for depression long before my MS diagnosis.

I’m extremely grateful that I learned some coping techniques and found a medication that works for me before my first MS flare. Plus, I’m extremely lucky that my family and friends never stigmatized mental health conditions and have always supported me.

The Struggle Is Real

According to Mental Health America, “For those dealing with a chronic health condition and the people who care for them, it can be especially important to focus on mental health. When dealing with dueling diagnoses, focusing on both the physical and mental health concerns can be daunting – but critically important in achieving overall wellness.”

Well, daunting seems like a bit of an understatement to me! I do agree that mental health is critically important in achieving overall wellness. Personally, I know that the worse I feel physically, the worse I tend to feel mentally too. Yes, I know that the opposite can be true as well.

Unfortunately, when you don’t have as much control over your daily energy or pain levels as much as a ‘normal’ person does, you have to make harder choices. Doing things that are good for your mental health, like going for a walk in the park or meeting up with friends, can be physically impossible.

What CAN We Do?

Well, although I spend a lot of time at the doctors’ office, I am not a doctor and not giving you any medical advice. However, I am confident that by sharing our own stories, struggles, and successes, we can all help each other.

No matter what you’re dealing with in life, you deserve to be happy. You are enough. I do think you can find joy in life with chronic illness and that includes mental health conditions too. I wrote a blog post sharing some of my favorite strategies here, but a few of my go-to ways to find joy are:

  • Snuggle with your favorite pet. Dixie, my rescue dog, is critical in my life and brings me so much joy!
  • Talk to someone. I have personally found that meeting with a professional therapist is helpful, and worth the time and energy.
  • Find an online support community if you can’t get out of the house. Join us on Facebook in Full of Grit and Grace if you’d like.
  • Readjust your expectations, try to think of the little feel-good moments, and celebrate the small wins in your life.
  • Try not to waste your precious energy on beating yourself up mentally. Life is hard enough without us being harder on ourselves.

  • Recognize that doing your best is always enough. Is breathing all you accomplished today? That is enough.

Use Your Energy Wisely

Look, we all want successful businesses, clean houses, fab hair, and home-cooked meals, but it’s just not attainable for most people to ‘do it all’, let alone someone with a chronic illness! If you’re dealing with chronic fatigue, as I do, then you know that you never know how much energy you’ll have each day. That makes it even more important to learn to prioritize ruthlessly, which I discussed further in this blog post.

When my body tells me I need to rest, either by giving up completely or giving me the dread cognitive ‘fog’, I have to take a break. Pushing myself or ‘hustling’ harder will NOT work when you have a chronic illness. So the dishes might stay dirty. The house always needs to be cleaned. The meals aren’t gourmet. And, I use way too much dry shampoo. But, those are things that are a part of my new ‘normal‘ and I’ve come to accept them.

Minimize Stress

Minimize stress? Yeah, right. I know you’re rolling your eyes at me! And that’s ok, because life is freaking stressful. Right?! We cannot control a lot of things in this world, but we can learn to control how we react. Things that would stress me out before, like those constantly dirty dishes I mentioned above, I’ve learned to let go of. I don’t have extra energy to waste stressed out about unimportant things. Of course, I still get stressed, but therapy, meditation, and learning to give myself grace have helped a LOT. Mental health issues, like the depression, and anxiety I have, are common in today’s society. Unfortunately, they’re still sometimes stigmatized. If you need help, medication, or talk therapy, please reach out to someone you trust. There is NO shame in doing what is best for you.

Strategies for Being More Productive When You Work From Home

Working from home is pretty awesome, isn’t it?! The commute is fantastic. The dog snuggles are a bonus. And the snacks are plentiful. But, it sure can be hard to FOCUS when you work from home. Right?

I’ve been a work from home dog-mom/business owner for over six years now and working from home with the added challenge of dealing with chronic illness for over three. While it’s not always easy to be productive, I have developed some strategies that I hope you’ll find helpful!

5 Strategies for Being More Productive When You Work From Home

Learning to Work Smarter, Not Harder

Prioritize ruthlessly: I’ve blogged about this before, but I believe it bears mentioning again! Start each workday with a plan by prioritizing the items on your to-do list in order of most to least time sensitive/critical.

My struggles with fatigue often mean that I won’t get more than a few things done each day. How do I stay successful? I focus on accomplishing the tasks that are critical first each day, which are typically the ones that involve the least amount of energy and receive the highest ‘payout’. Prioritizing ruthlessly by what is most important will help you to get more done each day. Want my free checklist to help you? Get it here! 

Create an environment that works for you: The home office setup that works well for me may not be the one that works the best for you! I’ve read many blogs that recommend creating a traditional office for your home in order to be productive. Yes, that can be very effective for a lot of people. However, sitting in a desk chair all day long isn’t conducive to my productivity, because it increases my chronic back pain.

My home office set up is less structured. I often work at my desk, then my recliner, then while stretching on my yoga mat (while I am on a call or listening to a podcast). I’ll even work on blog posts while walking (I use the Otter app to record my thoughts!). My home office includes a variety of pillows for comfort, my foam roller, yoga ball, and yoga mat, and of course my thercane and heating pad too! Yes, it might look more like a physical therapy center than an office, but I make it work. One day, I’d love to be able to have a walking desk too. 

Create Balance: For anyone who works from home, balancing the home and business sides of their lives can feel downright impossible, especially if the reason you began working from home was so you could spend more time with family. However, many home businesses actually fail because people don’t manage to balance business and home life. How can you juggle your family’s needs, your business needs and occasionally find some time for your needs without being a superhero?

You need to learn to create balance. If your family/partner/spouse isn’t supportive of your work from home job and requirements then you’re going to find it to be far more difficult. It’s not easy, but I promise it IS possible.

Learn to create balance by saying ‘no’ to things that don’t further your goals or bring you joy! Consistently review which task is necessary or not necessary in achieving your goals and which activities are helping you maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Give Yourself Grace!

Prioritize Self-Care: Yes, I’m talking about self-care and productivity in the same sentence. Why? Because I 100% believe that you will be more productive if you schedule time for yourself within your work day/week. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s critical, especially if you’re dealing with a chronic illness.

There are countless studies that show we are more productive and more creative when we eat well, sleep well, and take frequent small breaks. We talk about this frequently and share our self-care strategies in the Full of Grit and Grace Facebook group too.

Limit Distractions: Why yes, I can see you rolling your eyes here! Of course, you know you’ll be more productive with fewer distractions, but they seem to pop up when we are most vulnerable don’t they?! If you’re not getting anything done and can feel yourself falling into the trap of mindlessly scrolling Facebook for ‘work’, then go ahead and give yourself a short break!

Taking an action, any action will help propel you forward and give you more focus when you come back to the task. Yes, I run a social media marketing business, but I still consciously limit my time on Facebook, Instagram, etc. If you can’t seem to stay focused then try using a tool to limit your screen time or social media time. Instagram even allows you to limit time on the app natively now (Go to your profile, then your activity, and set a daily reminder with a limit if you’d like).

Several studies show that the human brain isn’t very good at multitasking and it’s even better at tricking itself into thinking it can. So quit trying to watch tv, blog, and talk to your BFF at the same time! While my husband has Fridays off and I don’t, I consistently reinforce that I love talking with him, but I can’t do it while I am working. So instead of interrupting me and launching into whatever he wants to tell me (after a lot of gentle reminders), he’s started to ask me questions during my breaks. Or he will ask me to take a break when I have a minute, which I have found to be far more conducive to actually finishing an email etc.!

So, although you may not have superpowers, you can still have a home life, a business life and some time for yourself. The next time you are feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath, ask your support system for some help and try out a few of these ideas for being more productive.

What IS Affiliate Marketing and Why Do I want to try it?

Affiliate marketing  is an excellent way to make extra money by sharing products that you love and would recommend anyway! For example, I’m an affiliate for my favorite business courses and tools. I already use them often and genuinely recommend them. As an affiliate, I make a small percentage if you buy through one of my links. But your cost remains the same. Is this a get rich quick scheme? NOPE. But affiliate marketing can add a few extra hundred dollars to your bank account each month. Who wouldn’t like that?!

As an affiliate marketer, you promote other businesses’ products and earn income based on the traffic and sales your site drives. When you become an affiliate, you agree to the terms and conditions (T&C) of that merchant’s program, and you use a specific link to mention the seller on your blog, social media, or email list.

When a visitor clicks the link, a cookie which tracks their browsing sessions and is placed on their computer for a period of time determined by the merchant. If the customer then makes a purchase, the seller checks for the cookie and credits you with a sale according to the terms of your contract.

Wait, this seems too easy.

Affiliate marketing really can be that easy! Personally, I stick to being an affiliate for products that I already like and services that I know and trust. Can you promote tons of different things and create lots of content and make lots of money? Sure.

I see bloggers around the internet doing that, and sharing about it. But, the affiliate marketing that I’m talking about is far more realistic in terms of time investment and income. I have to prioritize my tasks ruthlessly, because of my fatigue and Multiple Sclerosis. Plus, I know that many of you don’t have an extra forty hours each week to devote to a full-scale affiliate marketing business. However, with affiliate marketing, you can realistically make enough extra money each month to pay for those nice extras that your family wants, but doesn’t always get.

You can start using affiliate programs on a blog, social media page, etc. that you’re already running, or you can choose to start a new blog too. In my opinion, it is best to promote products you actually know and authentically recommend! Those products will fit in with your current or future Target Audience.

Yes, you can actually make money by sharing the things you already love in places that you’re already posting anyway! Not only can you make money, but you can also help your visitors find solutions to their problems. Promoting products that you’ve used yourself is easy for you because you have firsthand experience with them. It makes things easier for your customers too, because they find more of what they’re looking for in one place and from a person that they trust.

If you already have an existing customer base, you’ve already established trust with them, which will make affiliate marketing even easier. And if not? That’s okay too, we’ll talk about some basic marketing principles including how to be your authentic self and establish trust with your audience in my upcoming affiliate marketing course.

Actipatch Review: Does it Help with Pain?

We all deal with aches and pains, but what happens when the pain won’t go away? I was in a car accident 5 years ago, and I’ve had chronic back pain and sciatica ever since.
